Schmidt Westergard (Phoenix) Celebrates 50 Years of Service
Schmidt Westergard & Company, PLLC celebrates its 50th anniversary this year as a trusted and independent certified public accounting firm in Arizona. We are proud to recognize this milestone with a much larger team and a vision for continued growth.
As part of our anniversary celebration, the team at Schmidt Westergard will participate in several in-house and community-based activities with “50” as a theme. These will include community volunteering and participation in charity drives through organizations around Phoenix and the East Valley.
Looking back on the evolution of the firm, we can note several key achievements along the way. Started by sole practitioners in 1968, the firm has grown to nearly 40 professionals, including five partners. Managing Partner James Schmidt joined the firm Nelson Weatherly Lambson & Olvis (later Nelson Lambson & Co.) in 1983 after experience with Price Waterhouse (now PwC). He focused on building a formal tax practice and quickly became a partner in 1985. Schmidt was part of the firm’s decision to bring on Lynn Westergard from a Big Four firm as a partner in 1996. Westergard developed a sophisticated corporate and not-for-profit audit practice. Schmidt became managing partner for the firm in 2003.
The other partners are Jeffrey Bither, Todd Trendler and Christopher Jones. Bither, an AICPA-certified Personal Financial Specialist, contributes extensive experience in tax, international tax, estate and personal financial planning. Trendler brings more than 17 years of experience in tax from a Big Four accounting background. Likewise, Jones joined Schmidt Westergard after large regional firm experience in audits and has worked for more than 13 years in the industry.
“We really see ourselves as a Phoenix firm in one of the most attractive markets for business and real estate growth,” said Schmidt when reflecting on the firm’s legacy and vision. “We can provide that local insight and responsiveness while being connected to national and international resources. It’s a great combination for clients that require agility and proactive consulting.” The firm is a member of international accounting association, BKR International, which represents more than 160 independent accounting and business advisory firms in 80 countries.
Over the years, Schmidt Westergard has attracted sophisticated and large audits, complex tax consulting and merger & acquisition advisory engagements. Effective in 2005, the firm name officially changed to Schmidt Westergard & Company, PLLC. Like many growth-minded CPAs, the leadership team is focused on specific niche industry development and attraction of talent. What hasn’t changed is our focused analysis on matters of importance to clients balanced with a caring and ethical approach to our relationships.
